Gospel – Romans 5.8

Christ died for us

By Ho Kia Pang

Christ died for us. Such wondrous love. A song reflects such thoughts –
“When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died
Did ere such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown”

Why should the God of Glory show interest in me?

Historical Act Christ died.

Heb 2.14 -He also took part of the same
John 1.14 – The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
1 Tim 3.16 – God manifest in the flesh
1 john 2.42 – Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.

Consider the place where He died– at Calvary. The soldiers Sitting down they watched Him. People would choose to die in their own homes but our Lord died at Calvary. Outside the city.

Consider the death He died – He was crucified. The most excruciating and shameful slow death. Wicked and accursed of all execution. Degrading form of death but meted on our Lord.

Why did He have to die such a cruel death ?

He didn’t die a martyrs death but he was crucified with 2 malefactors. Isaiah prophesied that He was numbered with the transgressors.

Considered the way He died. He was betrayed. Ps 41.9 – mine own familiar friend has lifted up his heel against me. The Jewish leaders could not point a finger at Him. Judah betrayed The Lord. They whipped our Lord and made Him suffer. Psalms 22 – all that see me laugh me to scorn. They shake their head. They pierced my hand and my feet.

“What evil hath He done ? I find no fault in Him!” Said the Gentile judge. Yet He was crucified. Why?
If we were spitefully treated what would be our words? The Lord was gracious – “Father forgive them”

The cross reveals the meek character of our Lord. The could not find any fault in Him. Yet they put Him to the cross in the name of religion.

The cross tears away the deceptiveness of sin. That sin is cruel and exposed at the cross.

For us – because of us
On behalf of us – in our place
Instead of us – substitution

Christ died for us. Romans 5.8
